Entrants aged 10 to 13
For entry to Years 7, 8 and 9 in September 2013, parents are asked to complete the application form and return it by post, together with the registration fee, to Mrs Amanda Skinner, the Headmaster’s Personal Assistant, by Friday, 13th December 2013 at the latest. Application forms received well in advance of this date are, of course, very much appreciated. Where an application form is not received by the deadline, the candidate concerned may have to sit a supplementary entrance examination at a later date.
Prospective entrants to Year 7 (11+) and Year 8 (12+) will be required to sit an entrance examination on Tuesday 7th January 2014. The examination will involve papers in English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. A detailed school report is also requested from the candidate’s current headteacher; this should include comment on the candidate’s academic attainment, aptitude in Physical Education, Music and Technology, as well as attitude towards school life and work. Subsequent to the examination, it is possible that some candidates will be invited into school for interview; this may be because, for example, a candidate has not performed consistently well in all subjects or has not performed at the level suggested in the headteacher’s report. These interviews will be held in the weeks following the entrance examination. We appreciate that these may be the first interviews that some candidates will have faced and we always do all that we can to ensure that the children concerned are at their ease. Our decision with regard to the offer of a place will be posted to parents during the first week of February. At the same time, parents will be notified of any award of scholarships or any financial support which can be offered under the bursary scheme.
Prospective entrants to Year 9 will also be tested on Tuesday, 7th January 2014. The test comprises written papers in English, Mathematics, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning, with interviews for science and a modern foreign language. Candidates are required to bring samples of current work to the interview and may, as part of the assessment process, be asked to complete short written exercises. The aim of the interview is to test the candidates on what they know, as revealed, for example, in their sample of current work. As with the interviews which may take place for entry into Years 7 and 8, the intention will be to make the interview process a positive experience. The outcomes of 13+ testing will be posted to parents approximately two weeks later.
For candidates at all levels, where a place is offered, parents are asked to indicate their acceptance by the first week of March. A non-refundable deposit of £300 is required on acceptance of a place which will be deducted from the first term’s fees.
Successful candidates and their parents will be invited into school during the Summer term. Our Welcome Evening for parents takes place on Tuesday, 24th June 2013 and our Welcome Afternoon for pupils will take place on Friday, 24th June 2013.
