How to Apply

Entrance to the School for children aged 3- 4 years

Careful tracking and assessment of pupils in recent years shows that the majority of children who enter the School non-selectively into either the Nursery or Reception years (ages 3 – 4) will reach a good academic standard by the age of 11, whereby they are capable of passing entrance examinations to King Henry VIII Senior School. Thus children who start at these ages are not subject to passing academic assessments prior to joining.

Children may start at King Henry VIII Preparatory School just after they are 3 years of age. Parents can register their children for places at the School from birth, and be confident that these places will be available as long as basic developmental milestones have been reached and it is felt that children are independent enough to cope with either Nursery or Reception at the School. In the term prior to a child starting at the School, parents and child are asked to attend the School so that the child can be observed in the school setting and a profile can be created by the Head of Early Years in collaboration with the parents.

Entrance to the School for children aged 5 - 11

Entrance to the School from the age of 5 (Year 1 – Year 6) is subject to academic selection. Assessments are informally completed during the course of a ‘taster day’ for children wishing to gain places in either Year 1 or Year 2 (ages 5 – 6). A formal morning of entrance examinations is arranged for those children whose parents wish them to join the School from the ages of 7 to 11 (Year 3 – 6).

Entrance assessments provide information regarding children’s ability in English, Mathematics and their overall academic potential. The School also contacts each candidate’s present school to ask for a reference, to help provide a balanced assessment.

A place at King Henry VIII Prep School will be offered if staff feel that the School is the right place for the child in question to develop his/her gifts and talents, and there is a fair chance of the child passing entrance to King Henry VIII Senior School by the age of 11.
